Most water heaters fail on their own schedule, often at an inconvenient time. Knowing the age of yours lets you replace it on your schedule instead.
Typical lifespans
The Department of Energy says tank water heaters typically last 10 to 15 years, and tankless units up to about 20.
Finding the age
Look at the label on the side of the heater. The manufacture date is often printed directly or encoded in the serial number; the manufacturer's website usually explains how to read it.
Signs it is near the end
- Rust on the tank or rusty hot water.
- Rumbling or popping from sediment.
- Water around the base of the tank.
- Hot water running out sooner than it used to.
General information, not professional or legal advice; follow your manufacturer's manual, and your installer and local permit office have the final word. Sources:U.S. Department of Energy, Building America: Transitioning to a Tankless Water Heater.
